The internet and the telephone are being used more and more to inform alcoholics and chemical dependents about their disease and about rehab treatment options.
But Addictions UK have gone a step further and use both the telephone and the internet to deliver treatment.
This can suit a number of people who might otherwise be unwilling or unable to seek treatment – such as people in the public eye or ethnic or other minorities (especially those who might feel stigmatised).
Internet or telephone counselling could also play a role in aftercare for patients who are leaving residential treatment particularly lone parents or those in rural areas who can’t access AA / NA meetings.
The telephone can also offer an emergency ‘relapse prevention’ tool, especially at those critical moments.
Simon Stephens – Addictions UK Director of Case-work says,
“Telephone contact makes it easy for clients to receive coaching and support at any time. Low drop-out rates are another natural facet of our treatment experience. Overall, ten years’ experience has taught us that telephone coaching and counselling works. But now clients are becoming familiar with new technologies, especially on-line facilities like video chat. The telephone will continue to provide an effective and convenient way to deliver addictions treatment at home but new technologies now offer exciting opportunities.”
There is more about the work of Addictions UK, home detox service on their website, or you can, of course, contact them by telephone too!

Feb 1, 2012 at 11:09 amModern internet based approaches allow you to create a pyramid of interventions. The idea being that the patient is self-supporting and taking a role in there own recovery and only feeds into either video chat or a phone based response if needed. It also allows the keyworker/advisor to build up a picture of trigger's.
