The Office of National Statistics today released their annual report on the state alcohol-related deaths in the UK. They found that figures had increased from the previous year and that these death rates are now highest for people of an older age (55-74) than any other age group. They also found that while the number of alcohol-related deaths among men has risen, the number among women has fallen.

Just back from the NEAR conference in Ireland. I heard a lot of good presentations and one really stood out - 'How Neuroscience Helps Us Understand Addiction Recovery' by Professor Carlton Erickson. Two points from his talk on methadone prescribing and the different stages of alcohol use interested me.

Police have called for a national debate on parental responsibility after 70% of drunk teens stopped in a seaside town were found to have been given alcohol by their mother or father. Elderly people should reduce their drinking from 4 units a day, which is the current recommendation for adults, to just 1.5 units (the equivalent of half a pint of beer).
A recent report from the Royal College of Psychiatrists backs up this recommendation with a battery of facts and figures, for example 14% of men over 65 binge drink, many of them at home.
