For the treatment of alcoholism and other addictions

Information for the Media

Castle Craig Hospital is located in 50 acres of grounds in the Scottish Borders. It is a residential hospital for the inpatient treatment of alcoholism and drug addiction. The hospital is registered with the relevant statutory body, namely the Scottish Care Commission. It is a major contractor to the National Health Service and is recognised by the major medical insurers in the U.K. Many insurance companies from other countries fund the treatment at Castle Craig. The hospital is also recognised by other governments outside Scotland.

The treatment process is based on the Minnesota Model and promotes The 12 Step Programme as a way of recovery from chemical dependency. A detoxification from alcohol and other drugs is also provided, if needed.

Castle Craig was founded in 1988 by Peter and Dr. Margaret McCann. Their experience in directing a treatment programme for addictive disease started in April 1983, when they founded a centre, Clouds House in Wiltshire. After successfully running Clouds for 5 years, they opened, in consultation with the Borders Health Board, Castle Craig Hospital .
