How To Quit & Stop Smoking Through Smoking Cessation Therapy

Do you want to quit?

FSmoking is a major public health problem and at Castle Craig we offer help and support to all our patients who are thinking of quitting.

It is very easy to become addicted to cigarettes, in fact the World Health Organisation published a report in 1998 stating that nicotine has been shown to have effects on brain dopamine systems similar to those of drugs such as heroin and cocaine.

Cigarette smoke contains around 500 gaseous compounds including nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ammonia, acetone, hydrogen cyanide, formaldehyde and benzene. Smoking causes not only causes lung cancer, but also emphysema and cardiovascular disease, pulmonary obstructive disease, high blood pressure and fertility problems, among other problems. We believe that the hazards of active and passive smoking are a major health threat not only for our patients but also for the staff. For that reason the rooms at Castle Craig have been smoke free for many years.

We offer a smoking cessation programme to our patients, giving them the opportunity to deal with their addiction to tobacco. Our specially trained nurses and therapists deliver an educational programme focussing on the consequences of tobacco use and they supervise the prescribing of nicotine replacement therapy to help patients quit. The programme includes educational and motivational groups and a support group runs in conjunction with formal group therapy, providing a further opportunity for patients to share their experience, strength and hope.

Smoking cessation therapy is offered to patients who are already at Castle Craig and receiving treatment for addiction to substances other than nicotine. We want our patients to leave Castle Craig at the peak of their health and to continue that way thereafter.
