Gambling addiction

For most people a bet on the horses or the purchase of a lottery ticket is a harmless pastime. Unfortunately for some people gambling can become an obsession and an addiction. These are some of the symptoms typical of problem gambling:

  • Preoccupation with gambling
  • Unsuccessful attempts to stop
  • Chasing losses
  • Betting increasing amounts of money

As the addiction progresses, the person’s life increasingly becomes focussed on the next gambling “fix” and there is eventually a progressive downward spiral leading to desperation, depression and feelings of shame and fear. Unfortunately many gamblers do not seek help until the problem is severe and causing serious distress and by this stage professional help is required.

Castle Craig Hospital provides a safe therapeutic environment where patients are able to explore their gambling behaviour, benefit from assessment by a consultant psychiatrist and professional help from a team of experienced staff. Very often another addiction e.g. alcohol dependence may co-exist along with gambling and it is essential that these other dependencies are addressed.

The programme offers a Twelve Step treatment approach including:

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy
  • Education
  • Relapse prevention therapy
  • Family therapy
  • Information on how the Twelve Steps recovery approach can be adapted to further assist recovery.
