Gambling Addiction – Help & Support

For most people, betting on the horses or buying a lottery ticket is a harmless pastime. Unfortunately for some people gambling can become an obsession and an addiction. These are some of the symptoms of problem gambling:

  • Preoccupation with gambling and obsession with the next fix,
  • Unsuccessful attempts to stop,
  • Betting increasing amounts of money and taking greater risks to get more of a high,
  • Conflict - gambling begins to conflict with personal and professional relationships,
  • Chasing losses,
  • Withdrawal - increased moodiness, anxiety and irritability when unable to gamble.

There are estimated to be 360,000 - 451,000 problem gamblers in the UK and this figure is rising.  Gambling, especially online gambling, is one of the fastest growing addictions in the world today.

As gambling addiction progresses, the person's life becomes focussed on the next gambling “fix” and there is eventually a progressive downward spiral leading to desperation, depression and feelings of shame and fear. Unfortunately many gamblers do not seek help until the problem is severe and they are facing financial ruin.

Very often another addiction e.g. alcohol dependence may co-exist along with gambling and it is essential that these other addictions are addressed.
