A Night Porter / Overnight Safety Assistant 


Job Description

Castle Craig Hospital is a centre of excellence for the treatment of addiction, rated ‘Exceptional’ by our regulators Healthcare Improvement Scotland. We are located 30 minutes from Edinburgh and 45 minutes from Glasgow, in the beautiful Scottish Borders.

We are currently looking to recruit a Night Porter / Overnight Safety Assistant, to provide a high-quality service to carry out Portering and other tasks around the hospital and supporting the Health & Safety management with an emphasis on fire safety, in addition to being a supportive member of our team. This role requires someone with a positive attitude who is solution focused and enthusiastic about their work, as well as someone who can use their initiative and be flexible in their roles and responsibilities as required. It is essential that you have the physical ability to undertake the work needed and can work without direct supervision during the night shift.

Role Responsibilities:

A Night Porter / Overnight Safety Assistant will ensure they work in partnership with the Services manager who will allocate key tasks to be completed during the Night Porter / Overnight Safety Assistant shift, they may include, but are not exclusive to;

Night Maintenance and Safety Officer Task List

General Housekeeping

  • Clean and disinfect common areas, including waiting rooms, medical centres, hallways, and bathrooms
  • Empty bins and dispose of waste (indoor and outdoor bins).
  • Order and Restock cleaning and housekeeping supplies (while keeping inventory) and ensure bathrooms have necessary hand towels, soaps and other necessities
  • Perform laundry duties, including washing, drying, and folding linens.
  • Ensure that spaces are tidy and well-maintained, including moving furniture and resetting rooms.

Maintenance

  • Conduct routine inspections of the building’s infrastructure, checking for any damage or wear and tear, recording items requiring attention on UPKEEP
  • Address snagging and complete tasks as allocated from UPKEEP
  • Perform minor repairs such as replacing light bulbs and addressing other minor issues.
  • Check generators and heating systems.
  • Check that the Radiators are on or off as they should be for that time of year and that indoor temperatures are within range.
  • Monitor water systems and carry out our necessary water plant checks and testing.
  • Respond to potential calls for out-of-hours maintenance support to ensure this cannot be resolved, without out-of-hours input, prior to out-of-hours support being utilised.

Grounds Maintenance

  • Conduct nightly patrols of the hospital’s 50-acre grounds to ensure no unauthorised individuals are on the property.
  • Check fire alarm panels for faults, ensuring they are fully operational and respond to any issues.
  • Clear walkways and entrances of debris, snow, or ice as needed (seasonal).
  • Water outdoor plants during spring and summer.
  • Conduct inspections of outdoor and emergency lighting and replace bulbs as necessary.
  • Ensure that parking areas and walkways are clear and well-lit.

Health and Safety

  • Conduct regular fire safety checks, including ensuring all fire exits are clear and fire extinguishers are in place and operational.
  • Check emergency exit signs and lighting.
  • Monitor and log the temperature and conditions of refrigerated medical supplies.
  • Perform safety drills or checks as scheduled.
  • Ensure all hospital policies regarding health and safety are adhered to.

Security

  • Monitor security cameras as required and conduct regular patrols of the hospital premises.
  • Respond to any security alerts or disturbances.

Tidying and Cleaning

  • Vacuum and mop floors in high-traffic areas.
  • Dust and wipe down surfaces, including furniture and equipment.
  • Clean windows and glass doors.
  • Deep cleaning of medical centres.
  • Restocking housekeeping rooms and stations around the hospital.
  • Tidying and organising offices.

Other Helpful Tasks

  • Complete and support incident reports as required in line with hospital policy.
  • Feeding and tending to animals.
  • Assist with patient transport within the hospital, if required.
  • Transport goods, furniture and other items to the correct locations within the hospital.
  • Provide support to medical staff during emergencies.
  • Check inventory levels of office supplies and place orders.
  • Maintain a log of all maintenance and housekeeping activities for the next shift, using UPKEEP.
  • Ensure all tools and equipment used during the shift are properly stored.

Seasonal Tasks

  • Winter: Shovel snow and apply salt to walkways and entrances.
  • Spring: Assist with coordinating nighttime culls as required
  • Summer: water garden areas and complete outdoor tasks, such as clearing debris and weeds as requested to do so
  • Fall: Rake leaves, clean gutters, and prepare outdoor areas for winter.

Training for necessary fire safety and incident management will be provided for the successful candidate.

Experience Required:

  • Previous porter experience
  • Previous manual handling training
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Effective communication and customer care skills
  • Ability to work independently and with multiple departments
  • Ability to prioritise workload
  • Ability to deal with stressful situations
  • Intermediate literacy skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Some basic DIY skills, such as putting together items of furniture and painting.

Essential Requirements:

Must have a full clean driver’s license.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Permanent

Remuneration: £12.00 per hour

Expected hours: 30 – 40 per week
