Step 5 Listeners – Volunteering Role

Overview:

Castle Craig promotes personal and communal well-being by offering a supportive Listening Service to our patients during the 5th step of the 12 step program.

Ideally, individual sessions should last no more than 50 minutes. Telling their story to a trusted person enables people to move on in their own understanding of their life situation. This involves skilled reflective listening, and where appropriate, offering resources or signposting the person to other helping avenues.

This person-centred service focuses entirely on the patient’s agenda. This is not a therapy session, but a role to listen and allow the patient to speak openly and freely in a confidential space.

Time Commitment:

Up to 2 hours per month, as well as supervision time as outlined below.  This may vary by mutual agreement but needs to be negotiated in advance.

Requests for step 5 listeners will be on an ad hoc basis as required and there will be periods where this is not required for any patients and other times where this is required and requests for step 5 listeners to attend the hospital will be made.

Reporting to: Unit Lead/s as allocated

Regular supervision will be provided in two ways:

1. Oversight of ad hoc sessions

2. Four Sessions/year of supervision provided by an appropriate supervisor.

Main Tasks

  • Providing a non-judgmental, skilled, listening service to enhance wellbeing.
  • Maintaining appropriate records as required and directed by the Unit Lead in line with local GDPR arrangements.

Required skills, qualities, and experience:

The Listener must be able to demonstrate high levels of competence in the following areas:

  1. skilled, reflective listening
  2. practical experience as a Listener in a formal or informal setting
  3. self-awareness and good communication skills

In addition, the Listener must be able to demonstrate:

  • commitment to engaging in supervision

Additional notes:

All those submitting an expression of interest in regard to becoming a step 5 listener, will be contacted to arrange an informal discussion to assess suitability for the role.  If you are offered a role as a step 5 listener at Castle Craig Hospital you will be required to sign up for a volunteer agreement and confidentiality statement, as well as undergo relevant PVG checks. This is not a paid role, but out-of-pocket expenses such as fuel costs, to carry out this role will be reimbursed.

Step 5 Listeners

Role Description: To assist patients at step 5 of the 12 step programme

  1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol — that our lives had become unmanageable.
  2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
  3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
  4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
  5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
  6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
  7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
  8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.
  9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when doing so would injure them or others.
  10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
  11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
