The Possible Reasons Some People Become Alcoholics

Many people become alcoholics very innocently with just an initial drink with friends. Maybe it was peer pressure or maybe it was based on some dysfunctional modelling at home but some people end up liking the way it makes the person feel or behave and others become addicted physically and neurologically to drinking. The question is not how a person became addicted as much as how a person can fight back against addiction.

Risk Factors of Alcoholism

Alcohol is a drug which blocks out emotional and sometimes physical pain. This is a strong draw for young people especially who find the effects intoxicating. Adulthood is a major challenge to be overcome and some people need time to relieve stress, sometimes in the form of drinking. Adults also become addicted to alcohol for many reasons.

  • Fears

  • Biological factors

  • Dysfunctional family life

  • Abandonment issues

  • Unresolved childhood trauma

  • Low self-esteem

  • Family history

  • Peer pressure

This list is not exhaustive but demonstrates the many reasons people can get pulled into the abyss of addiction to alcohol.

Alcoholism and Genes

Genes are responsible for nearly half of the risk for alcoholism. Genes alone do not determine whether a person will become alcoholic. Environmental factors play a role as well as genes. This factor along with childhood trauma, low self-esteem, peer pressure or other issues can result in dangerous consequences of addiction.

Seeking Help for Alcoholism

There is help and hope for people who struggle with addiction. Genes and environmental factors do not have to determine the entirety of a person’s life. The following are great places to get started:

  • Conduct self assessment by doing research online

  • Seek out support groups such as 12-step programmes

  • Seek one-on-one professional support through therapists, doctors or other counsellors

  • Find a treatment centre that focuses on addiction recovery and provides support for after care
