About Castle Craig
The bank consultant psychiatrist will be responsible in the absence of our Medical Director for undertaking direct clinical work and contributing to the medical leadership of the service appropriate to their level of seniority and professional background. Working closely with consultant colleagues, nursing staff, therapists and senior management, the role involves ensuring safe, effective and timely assessment and treatment of inpatients with complex addiction and mental health needs.
The role

Working closely with consultant colleagues, nursing staff, therapists and senior management, the role involves ensuring safe, effective and timely assessment and treatment of inpatients with complex addiction and mental health needs.
The exact scope of responsibility will be agreed according to the applicant’s professional role (Consultant Psychiatrist, Specialty Doctor, or GPwSI) and level of experience.
Key responsibilities
- Undertake comprehensive clinical assessments of new admissions, including psychiatric, medical and substance-use assessments as appropriate to role.
- Provide ongoing medical review, treatment planning and risk management for inpatients.
- Prescribe and manage pharmacological treatments in line with clinical guidelines and hospital policies.
- Contribute to the medical oversight of detoxification and stabilisation programmes.
- Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to deliver coordinated, patient-centred care.
- Participate in daily clinical meetings, ward rounds and handovers.
- Contribute to clinical governance activities, including audit, incident review and quality improvement.
- Support safe patient flow, admission and discharge planning.
- Provide supervision, advice and clinical input to junior medical staff where appropriate.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory, professional and organisational standards.
About you
Essential (all applicants)
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise in the UK.
- Relevant postgraduate training and experience in psychiatry, general practice, or addiction medicine.
- Demonstrable experience in the assessment and management of substance use disorders and associated mental health conditions.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary inpatient setting.
- High standards of professionalism, communication and clinical judgement.
- Commitment to safe, ethical and evidence-based practice.
Additional essential criteria by role
- Consultant Psychiatrist: Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for Psychiatry.
Desirable
- Experience in residential rehabilitation or independent sector healthcare.
- Familiarity with clinical governance, audit and quality improvement processes.
- Experience of managing medically and psychiatrically complex patients.
- Interest in teaching, supervision or service development.
