Castle Craig was founded in 1988 by Peter and Dr. Margaret McCann. Their experience in directing a treatment programme for addictive disease started in April 1983, when they founded Clouds House in Wiltshire. After successfully running Clouds for five years, they opened Castle Craig Hospital, a private facility.
Their vision for Twelve Step Treatment in the UK began in 1981 when Peter McCann established the Life Anew Trust along with its Chairman, Andrew Page, Chairman of the Band of Hope and other trustees. Their interest was influenced by their Christian commitment and the philosophy of the 12 Steps. The spiritual ethos of the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous has its roots in the Oxford Group Movement but the 12 Step approach has been widely adopted by all people whether their faiths are religious or non-religious.
Castle Craig continues to deeply value the original Christian and spiritual heritage which shaped its work. Patients are assured of our commitment to quality care, recognising the uniqueness of each person and their right to pursue their own search for meaning and spirituality.
The hospital is registered with the relevant statutory body, the Scottish Care Commission. It is a major contractor to the National Health Service and is recognised by the major medical insurers in the U.K. Many insurance companies from other countries fund the treatment at Castle Craig. The hospital is a preferred provider to the U.S. Government under the Tricare programme and it is also recognised by the Dutch insurance companies.
Castle Craig Hospital is located in the stunning countryside of the Scottish Borders, approximately 20 miles from Edinburgh. The property, which includes 50 acres of parkland and woods, is surrounded by the Borders hills, creating a relaxed and tranquil environment conducive to healing and recovery.
