Inpatient vs Outpatient Drug Rehab

Inpatient vs Outpatient Drug Rehab

Here at Castle Craig, our primary course of treatment is inpatient residential rehab.

Inpatient drug rehab can be more costly and disruptive to daily life. However, the results and benefits of intensive drug treatment programmes prove that it is one of the best ways to overcome addiction long term.

Inpatient treatment for substance misuse combines all types of addiction treatment. It offers access to 24/7 medical and emotional support.  Treatment is never 9-5 and continues into the evening with AA/NA meetings.  It is immersive and free of the distraction of family/work and home life.

It is also contained and away from home. That help with cravings and restricts access to dealers.

And as medical professionals with over 30 years of experience in drug addiction, it is the only course of treatment we would be 100% confident in recommending.

Inpatient Rehab

Inpatients at our drug rehab stay within our Castle grounds for 4-5 weeks. They will attend a full schedule of therapeutic activities, including at the weekends. Ā It allows all patients the time needed to connect with both the staff and other fellow sufferers. This process is called recovery.

“This includes 24/7 access to care, and detoxification and is the most comprehensive option for drug addiction treatment.”

How Does Inpatient Rehab Work?

You will have access to specialists, therapists, and other medical professionals 24 hours a day. Regular monitoring and interaction with professional therapists mean that patients can be assured that we are with them every step of the way.

Sometimes with drug addiction, it is about just getting through the next hour without using.

We have doctors with medical knowledge and medication and therapist who know how to listen and advise on hand 24 hours a day.  We know that getting clean is hard. Many of the staff have personal experience.

Inpatient rehabs like ours have a set schedule that will consist of a full day of activities, therapies, and educational talks. The idea is to immerse people into recovery whilst closely monitoring their progress. All staff works together.

Any behavior or signs of trauma, depression, or previous abuse are picked up and fed back to the team. Patients can then have additional treatment to overcome their specific issues. This type of monitoring and getting to know patients is not possible in an outpatient facility.

A disadvantage of outpatient rehab is that things can happen outside of the facilities, like arguments with spouses or acting out that we cannot always be aware of.

We have seen it all before and are on hand to help when the road gets rockier.

Who Does Inpatient Drug Rehab Work Best For?

Inpatient rehab is a must for patients with a severe addiction that is life-threatening. Unfortunately, with severe addiction, outpatient facilities are rarely successful.

Inpatient rehab for alcohol and drug addiction also work best for patients who are committed to recovery and want it for themselves. Our programme typically lasts 35 days with an option to further strengthen your recovery with our advanced treatment programme.

You will be required to stay on-site at Castle Craig, which means you will have to take time away from work or your family for this period. Don’t worry, all our modern bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms.

Is Inpatient Rehab Effective?

As the most intense form of treatment, it has proven successful in helping those with severe drug addiction by firstly eliminating it from your body in our medically managed detox and then freeing its influence over your mind through our proven adoption of the Minnesota model.

“We find inpatient rehab often to be the most successful form of treatment, especially when carried out over 35 days.”

Inpatient care works because those suffering from drug misuse and dependency disorders often have mental health conditions that require personalized treatment plans. These take time to have an effect and to equip patients with the knowledge and insight to recover.

At Castle Craig, we have specialists on-site who can assess, advise and plan the best course of treatment for your unique issues. There is nothing we have not seen before.

After Inpatient Rehab

After detoxification and inpatient rehab, patients will be able to return to work, friends, family, and most of the activities they used to enjoy doing.

All patients have relapse prevention therapy to outline the do’s and don’t’s of early recovery.

The risk of returning home is being around people, places, and things that could lead to a relapse. We hope that all of the treatment patients have in place, plus the structured aftercare we offer is sufficient to make these difficulties both manageable and understandable.

“We find that many ex-patients do, feel, and believe that which they could not do before on their unaided strength and resources alone.”

Post-rehab is the time to put in place all of the tools of recovery Castle Craig has taught. It is the time to enjoy and embrace the changes that are required to live a sober life.

The hospital is always here to support ex-patients or as a last resort. We want people to go and enjoy their new life. No one got sober to be miserable!

Outpatient Rehab

In outpatient rehab, patients live at home while attending therapy sessions several times a week at a local clinic.  Outpatient programmes are usually for several weeks and might not be daily. There is often no support at the weekend or after hours.

Outpatient programmes are much cheaper than inpatient rehabs as the level of care is so much less, and there is no accommodation. Patients are often required to retain their GP for medication reviews, and many outpatient rehabs may not have a psychiatrist.

Outpatient rehab rules are not as stringent as inpatient rehabs, and there is a relaxation on attendance.

Outpatient treatment is designed for addicts who can cope to some degree on their own and are not in danger of relapsing or overdosing. They are often used for patients who have already completed primary treatment (impatient rehab) and have some ‘clean’ time under their belt.

Outpatient treatment provides a level of care and support. However, it allows you to maintain your daily responsibilities and stay in closer contact with loved ones.

Other Outpatient Services:

  • Addiction counseling: Some mental health therapists specialize in substance misuse treatment or offer addiction counseling as part of their private practice. Addiction therapy usually centers on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and other talking-based therapies.
  • Day hab: Addiction therapy, assessments, and aftercare support. (London only) More.
  • Support groups:12-Step groups like NA are free and available worldwide. Some people attend support groups as a primary means of rehabilitation; others do so to complement their rehab programme or to maintain sobriety.

What Can Rehab Teach Me?

Both in and outpatient facilities have their advantages and disadvantages. Many given the option would probably lean towards inpatient care.

It is more intensive and more likely to identify problems and issues that could lead to relapse. However, outpatient care is just as valuable, especially for individuals in the earlier stages of addiction.

After 28-60 days of any rehab treatment, you will be out in the “real world” with work and your friends and family on your journey to recovery.

What Rehab Teaches You:

  • Rehab will prepare you for when it is time to leave and help you make your own decisions going forward.
  • Rehab teaches patients to be in charge of their own decisions.
  • Rehab is a controlled and safe environment where you will learn skills about being independent and remaining abstinent.
  • Rehab teaches ways of identifying the warning signs of relapse and what to do.
  • Practical coping mechanisms taught to patients help with cravings or cues that trigger difficult emotions that could lead to drugging.
  • Patients will also work on exercises to help build confidence to make long-term recovery possible and overcome obstacles with friends, family, and professionals.
