Amphetamine detoxification is the first step in treatment for amphetamine addiction. If you or someone in your life is considering detox, you may have some questions. What will withdrawal feel like, how long will it last, and will it be safe?
At Castle Craig, amphetamine detox is medically managed in a residential setting in the Scottish Borders. Our clinical team, led by a dedicated Consultant Psychiatrist, oversees every stage of withdrawal to keep you as safe and comfortable as we can.
Detox is only the first part of a full residential programme. When you’re ready, it is followed by structured therapy, 12 Step facilitation, and continuing care that supports long-term recovery.

Understanding amphetamine detox and withdrawal treatment
-
What does amphetamine detox involve?
When you arrive at Castle Craig, you’re settled into Kirkurd House, our dedicated admissions unit. Nursing staff assess you, set up a monitoring plan straight away, and from that point on you’re never left to manage on your own.
Amphetamine withdrawal is difficult, and often needs medical support. During withdrawal, executive functions like decision-making and self-control are needed at exactly the time patients feel the worst. At the same time, the pull to use again is at its strongest in this window because a single use of amphetamines instantly removes the discomfort of withdrawal.
Because of that pull, detox from amphetamines without clinical support carries risk. At Castle Craig, staff manage your symptoms and respond to changes as they happen.
The setting is also helpful in recovery. Castle Craig sits in the Scottish Borders, a long way from the people and places connected to previous amphetamine use. In the early days of withdrawal, it’s much harder to act on a craving when there are no drugs available or triggers present.

Amphetamine withdrawal: what to expect
In the days after stopping amphetamines, you may experience:
- Restless sleep
- Exhaustion
- Headaches
- Muscle aches
- Irritability
- Mood swings
- Anxiety
- Depression.
In the early phase, exhaustion and sleep disruption are usually the first things you notice. Your body is recovering from sustained stimulant use, and the crash can feel overwhelming.
As amphetamine withdrawal progresses, mood instability and anxiety become more prominent. Cravings can be intense in this phase, and some people also experience confusion or paranoia.
As symptoms subside, energy begins to return, your mood starts to settle, and your sleep improves. These are positive signs that the worst of the physical withdrawal is behind you.
Throughout every stage at Castle Craig, nursing staff monitor your symptoms and the clinical team adjusts your medications as needed.
-
How long does amphetamine detox take?
The initial ‘crash phase’ typically resolves within about a week. Protracted withdrawal symptoms generally resolve in three.
That timeline is a rough guide. How long withdrawal from amphetamine lasts depends on:
- How long you’ve been using
- What dose, and
- Your overall health
Your clinical team at Castle Craig adjusts the approach to fit you specifically.
-
Medically managed amphetamine detox: what makes it different?
There’s a difference between being supervised during withdrawal and being actively managed through it:
- Supervision means someone is watching over you
- Active management means a clinician is making decisions, adjusting your treatment, and responding to what’s happening in real time
The evidence base for medication-assisted stimulant withdrawal is still developing. A review of four randomised controlled trials found that some medications reduced treatment dropout rates, though evidence for reducing withdrawal symptoms specifically is less clear.
Intense craving during amphetamine withdrawal may be a factor leading to relapse. Medical management at Castle Craig targets that directly.
A dedicated Consultant Psychiatrist leads every medication decision. The medications most commonly used during amphetamine detox include:
- Quetiapine: helps with sleep disruption, agitation, and psychotic symptoms
- Diazepam: manages anxiety and muscle tension during acute withdrawal
- Propranolol: reduces heart rate and physical anxiety symptoms
- Mirtazapine: addresses depression and sleep problems during protracted withdrawal
These are prescribed only when there’s a clear medical need. They’re there to support you through withdrawal, never to replace one dependency with another.
“It’s all about acceptance […] when you accept that you’re an addict, your fighting is over. […] If you keep fighting, in the end you will lose – and that’s how most people think addiction can be won, by willpower. That’s the biggest mistake people make.”

What to expect from amphetamine detox treatment at Castle Craig
Once you understand what detox involves, beginning treatment at Castle Craig is very straightforward.
-
When you get in touch
The first step is a phone call, which is free and confidential and doesn’t tie you to anything. One of our admissions team will ask about your situation, your history with amphetamines, and what you’re looking for from treatment.
Calling an amphetamine detox centre can feel like a big decision, but it doesn’t need to be. You can pick up the phone long before you’re certain of anything, and you don’t need a referral either.
The pre-screening assessment helps both of us work out whether Castle Craig is the right place for you, and nobody will pressure you at any point.
-
The admissions process for amphetamine detox
After the initial call, we ask for a recent medical summary, which our medical staff review before admission. When you arrive, your clinical team already has your health details and can begin planning your detox from the start.
One case manager tracks your admission from first contact to arrival, so you have a single point of contact throughout. If you have questions about funding, insurance, or what to bring, they can help with all of that.

Detox is just the beginning
Amphetamine detox handles the physical withdrawal. The therapy that follows deals with the reasons the dependency developed in the first place.
Castle Craig’s Foundation programme includes individual therapy, group therapy, 12 Step facilitation, and therapeutic community activities. Your focal therapist and the Consultant Psychiatrist lead the team reviewing your progress and adjusting your treatment plan as you go.
There is a strong link between addiction and mental health conditions, and Castle Health treats all conditions together from the start.
After discharge, we provide continuing care to help with the transition back home. Aftercare at Castle Craig includes regular check-ins and access to recovery resources.

Frequently asked questions about amphetamine detox
-
Is it safe to detox from amphetamines at home?
If you attempt amphetamine withdrawal at home, you have no access to medication, no clinical monitoring, and no support during the period when cravings and mood disruption are at their most intense. While stimulant withdrawal is not typically life-threatening in the way alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal can be, the risk of relapse during unsupported withdrawal is high. Inpatient detox gives you the structure, monitoring, and medical support that you can’t get at home.
-
Does health insurance cover amphetamine detox at Castle Craig?
Many private health insurance policies cover residential treatment for stimulant dependence, including detox. Whether yours does depends on the terms of your specific policy and provider. Castle Craig works with a range of major insurers, and our admissions team can help you check your cover as part of the initial conversation.
-
What’s the difference between amphetamine detox and amphetamine rehab?
Detox is primarily an amphetamine withdrawal treatment to get you through the physical adjustment safely. Amphetamine rehab goes further with therapy for the psychological and behavioural patterns that drove the dependency, and ongoing support after discharge. At Castle Craig, detox and rehab run as one integrated programme, so you don’t finish one and then apply for the other.
-
Will I be given medication during amphetamine detox?
That depends on your clinical assessment. Our Consultant Psychiatrist only prescribes when your assessment shows a clear clinical need. They’ll always have long-term abstinence in mind, and they go on your individual situation rather than a standard protocol. If you’re concerned about medication, you can raise that during your assessment.
-
What happens after amphetamine detox at Castle Craig?
Once you’re physically stable, you move into Castle Craig’s residential programme. This is where the therapy starts in earnest, both one-to-one and in groups, alongside 12 Step work. After discharge, our continuing care programme supports you through the return to daily life.
