Exercise and Fitness

Exercise: An Integral Part of Rehab

Patients usually enter treatment in a poor physical state. Regular exercise gives the body the physical strength to overcome addiction - it increases blood flow around the body and to the brain thus increasing energy levels & mental alertness; and it suppresses alcohol & drug cravings, helping motivate patients in their recovery. 

Exercise gives the body the physical strength to overcome addiction.

Exercise also releases feel-good endorphins which increase positivity and reduce depression & anxiety, both of which can lead to relapse.

Fitness is an integral part of our treatment programme and we make sure that all patients have a minimum of three fitness sessions per week. On top of this many patients use their spare time to walk or jog around our extensive gardens.

Our Gym and Fitness Instructors

We have a gym equipped with cardio equipment, weights and a PowerPlate. Qualified fitness staff are always on hand to offer advice and motivation. Fitness activities available include aerobics, yoga and circuit training. Our fitness team includes Jo Sutherland, David Kilgour and Murray Thomson, all experienced trainers. The team will help and advise patients on their fitness regimes and we provide personalised exercise programmes for those with specific needs.

Yoga

We provide weekly yoga sessions for our patients in primary care treatment.

We also offer DDP Yoga to our patients in Extended Care. DDP yoga is a vigorous form of yoga which strengthens core muscles, increases cardio output and improves flexibility.

Stretching

Yoga can be too vigorous for some of our patients, for example those going through detox or those with mobility problems. Our fitness instructors provide lighter stretching exercises for these people.

Outdoor fitnessOutdoor Activities

Our extensive grounds are ideal for outdoor activities such as walking, jogging, and supervised volleyball.
