What is Librium?
Chlordiazepoxide is a generic benzodiazepine, a tranquiliser drug commonly known under its brand name Librium. It was the first synthesized benzodiazepine, released in the 1950s.
Librium is a short-acting benzodiazepine drug with a high potential for addiction when misused. Patients can develop a physical dependence on Librium even when undergoing treatment for a legitimate medical condition such as insomnia or anxiety. Under UK medical regulation, doctors are allowed to prescribe Librium for only two to six weeks.
Librium can be found on the street under various names: downers, tranks, bennies, L, blue bombs, nerve pills, blues, ruffies and normies – and can be used as a party drug or date rape drug because it is easily dissolvable in drinks and helps people relax and reduces inhibitions.
What is Librium prescribed for?
Librium is largely prescribed to treat medical conditions such as anxiety, alcohol withdrawal symptoms and surgery nervousness. Librium acts on the GABA neurotransmitter levels that regulate feelings of pleasure and relaxation, by slowing down functions such as breathing, blood flow and heart rate.
Librium is commonly mixed with alcohol – producing deep sedation, with opioids such as heroin to enhance its euphoric effects and cocaine – to diminish the stimulant’s effects. Mixing different drugs poses major health risks, such as respiratory depression, liver dysfunction, blackouts or overdose.

The Librium detox might last several weeks, as the user’s dosage is slowly reduced to allow their body to gradually readjust. We offer an online continuing care programme which runs for 24 weeks after leaving treatment, in order to ensure a smooth transition back into your everyday life. Patients leaving treatment automatically join our Recovery Club where they can stay connected via our annual reunion, events, online workshops and recovery newsletters.
